The Superhuman Framework: Holistic Approach to Professional Growth
16:28

I'm back with another great discussion with my buddy, Chris Carolan, about The Superhuman Framework.  The Superhuman Framework is designed to help growth-focused individuals, teams, and organizations thrive by focusing on what really matters—things like empathy, purpose, and well-being. It’s designed to align your personal values with your professional goals, creating a balanced, human-centered environment where growth and innovation can happen naturally.

The key to embracing The Superhuman Framework is a holistic approach, which is where our conversation begins today—because "holistic" is a bit of a buzzword of the moment, you know what I mean? Everybody's B2B solutions are "holistic." Your approach to health and wellness should be "holistic."

However, even though this word may be overused in some circles doesn't make it any less important. In fact, having a holistic approach crazy important if you're on a growth journey right now for yourself as an individual, an organizational leader, or an aspiring organizational leader.

It's way too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and lose sight of the bigger picture. But the truth is, you’ve got to consider all the parts that make you you—your physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. When you embrace this holistic mindset, you start to realize that growth isn’t just about hitting those big business goals.

☀️ Go Deeper: What Is The Superhuman Framework?

What Does a Holistic Approach Really Mean?

A holistic approach means looking at the whole picture—how all the parts of your life and work connect. Too often, we get stuck focusing on one thing. Maybe it’s hitting those quarterly goals, maybe it’s just trying to get through a chaotic week. But if we’re not taking care of everything—the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual pieces—we’re setting ourselves up for a crash down the road. Trust me, I’ve been there.

In both life and business, we tend to put our heads down and grind, but if we don’t zoom out once in a while, things slip through the cracks. What I’ve learned is that when you start thinking holistically, the whole game changes. You’re not just putting out fires anymore—you’re building something solid that can weather any storm.

What’s great about the holistic approach is that it’s not just about avoiding burnout—though that’s certainly important. It’s also about unlocking potential you didn’t even know was there.

When you take a step back and look at how all the pieces fit together, you start to see how your personal growth fuels your professional success, and vice versa. Whether it’s aligning your values with your work or finding purpose in what you do, this approach ensures that you’re not neglecting any part of your life. And when you stop neglecting those areas, that’s when real transformation happens. Suddenly, everything feels more connected, more meaningful, and that’s where the magic is.

Why Does a Holistic Approach Matter So Much?

Imagine you’re building a house. You’ve got the materials, you’ve got the tools, but if you’re laying those bricks on shaky ground, it’s all coming down at some point, right? Same goes for your personal and professional life. You can hustle all you want, but if you’re not giving attention to all the areas that make you who you are—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual—you’re going to burn out.

And burnout isn’t just about feeling tired—it’s about losing the drive and passion that got you started in the first place. That’s a tough spot to crawl back from. To help you reflect on this, here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

  • Am I only focusing on short-term wins, or am I building something sustainable for the long run?

  • When was the last time I took a step back to evaluate how the different areas of my life are interconnected?

  • Am I putting too much energy into one area of my life at the expense of others?

  • How often do I feel burned out or like I’m running on empty?

  • What are the signs that I’m neglecting my mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual well-being?

  • How do I define success—by short bursts of productivity or by long-term, balanced growth?

  • Do I feel fulfilled by my current hustle, or am I constantly chasing the next goal without reflecting on my overall well-being?

For me, this became real when I realized that grinding without balance was a short-term strategy. Yeah, I could hustle, hit goals, and maybe even feel good about it in the moment, but over time, the cracks would start to show. Heck, self-care is something I only very recently accepted as something I needed in my life.

The reality is, when we focus on just one piece of the puzzle—whether it's work, personal growth, or even just getting through the week—other parts of our lives start to suffer. That constant grind might get you results for a while, but it’s like running on fumes. At some point, you’re going to stall.

  • How can you grow if you're running on fumes?
  • How can you lead yourself if you're running on fumes?
  • How can you lead others if you're running on fumes?
  • How can you make smart decisions (not reactive ones) if you're running on fumes?

You can't. That's why this matters. The holistic approach gives you the stability to not just sprint, but to run the marathon—building sustainable growth and success, instead of chasing quick wins that leave you drained.

A Holistic Approach to Personal Growth

Before we even get into how this applies to your work or your team, let’s start with you. You can’t lead others effectively as a catalyst for growth if you’re not taking care of yourself first. Think about it: you can’t guide others through something you haven’t mastered yourself. If you’re barely holding it together, you’re not going to be much help to anyone else.

If you want to truly lead or support others, you need to make sure you’re in a good place. This work starts with you, because if you’re not steady, you won’t be able to offer stability to anyone else.

But what does putting yourself first mean? How do you tactically execute a holistic approach? I don't know about you, but I'm a guy who likes concrete plans and directions. So, the good news here is that, when we talk about living a holistic life, it’s not just some abstract concept—it’s about making sure you’re taking care of yourself in a well-rounded, intentional way.

To truly thrive, you need to give attention to four core pillar areas of your life: your physical health, your mental sharpness, your emotional well-being, and your spiritual grounding. If any one of those is off, you can throw your entire self off balance. Think about it—you can't drive a car with only three functioning tires, right?

So, here’s how I look at it, and here’s how you can take action:

  • Physical: Your body is your foundation. Whether it’s a workout, a walk, or even just making sure you’re getting enough sleep, taking care of your physical health is the bedrock for everything else. Without a healthy body, you can’t expect to show up mentally or emotionally at your best. So, ask yourself: are you moving enough? Are you fueling your body with the right foods? How’s your sleep? Start small if you need to, but commit to giving your body the attention it deserves.

  • Mental: Keeping your mind sharp is key. That doesn’t mean you have to dive into a 500-page textbook every night, but staying engaged, curious, and open to learning is what keeps your mental engine running smoothly. Maybe it’s reading a new book, learning a skill, or even allowing yourself to rest and unplug when your brain needs a break. Remember, rest isn’t the opposite of productivity—it’s part of it. Are you giving your mind the space to breathe and recharge, or are you running it on empty?

  • Emotional: Emotions are tricky, but they’re also your compass. If you’re bottling up stress, frustration, or even joy, it’s going to catch up with you. That’s why it’s crucial to check in with yourself regularly. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Frustrated? Excited? Make space to express those emotions—whether it’s through talking to someone, writing it out, or just taking a moment to breathe and reflect. If you ignore your emotions, they’ll eventually demand attention in ways you won’t like.

  • Spiritual: Now, when I talk about spirituality, I’m not necessarily talking about religion—though if that’s your thing, great. Spiritual well-being is about connecting to something bigger than yourself. It could be faith, meditation, mindfulness, or even just taking time for quiet reflection. It’s about grounding yourself, finding purpose, and aligning with something that gives your life meaning. What’s that thing for you? If you don’t know yet, take some time to explore it. The stronger your spiritual foundation, the more resilient you’ll be when life throws challenges your way.

When you start paying attention to all these areas, you create a rock-solid foundation for everything else in your life to stand strong. It’s not just about getting by—it’s about building the strength and resilience to handle whatever life throws your way. The beauty of this holistic approach is that once you get all these pillars working together, life doesn’t just get easier—it becomes richer, more fulfilling, and far more balanced.

Applying a Holistic Approach to Your Work

OK, now that we’ve covered the personal side, let’s talk about how this plays out in your professional life. Whether you're leading a team, running a business, or just trying to level up at work, taking a holistic approach changes everything. And trust me, I’ve seen what happens when you don't—people burn out, work suffers, and it all comes crashing down faster than you'd believe.

At the heart of any business are people, right? And people—whether they’re your colleagues, employees, or customers—aren’t just machines that can crank out work endlessly. They’ve got their own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. A holistic approach to leadership means understanding this and making sure you’re looking out for the well-being of your team. Because if your team is running on empty, no amount of strategy or fancy tools is going to fix that.

When you start looking at your team through this lens, it becomes clear that success isn’t just about hitting goals. It’s about creating an environment where people feel supported, where they can grow, and where they can bring their whole selves to the table. And I’m telling you, when your team feels seen and valued, they’re going to bring their best work. Every. Single. Time. It’s not magic—it’s just human nature.

So how do you actually do this in practice? Well, here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Think long-term, not just short-term. Quick wins are great, but if they come at the expense of your people, it’s not sustainable. Always ask yourself how your decisions will impact not just the immediate situation but also your team and business down the line.

  • Align with your values. If you’re running a business and don’t have clear values, it’s time to define them. Trust me, your values are what keep you grounded when everything else feels like it's spiraling out of control. They act as your North Star.

  • Support work-life balance. If your team is constantly teetering on the edge of burnout, there’s no way they can bring their best work. Encourage time off, flexibility, and space to recharge. Your team will thank you for it, and you’ll see the difference in their output.

☀️ Go Deeper: Fact vs. Fiction, What Is a Growth Mindset, Really?

When you start leading with a holistic mindset, it doesn’t just benefit your team—it benefits you, too. You’ll find that your leadership becomes more fulfilling, your connections with people stronger, and your results more sustainable. So, as you go forward, remember—it’s not about quick wins or grinding harder. It’s about leading with balance, intention, and a focus on what really matters: the people who make it all happen.

How to Lead with a Holistic Mindset

Leading a team or running a business isn’t just about checking off tasks—it’s about understanding the humans behind the work. A holistic leader doesn’t just focus on what their team can do, but who their team is. And that’s a big difference. I’ve seen teams transform when leaders actually take the time to get to know their people—what drives them, what excites them, and what their personal goals are. When you understand that, you unlock a whole new level of potential in your team.

The best leaders I’ve seen—and the ones I’ve tried to emulate—know that people bring their whole selves to work. When you recognize the unique strengths, challenges, and passions of each person on your team, you create an environment where they feel safe, seen, and ready to do their best work. And when your team feels valued, the quality of their work and commitment goes through the roof. That’s where real growth happens.

One thing I’ve found incredibly helpful is asking people about their personal goals and how they align with what they’re doing at work. Connecting the dots between someone’s personal development and their role in the company is a game-changer. It’s not just about making them feel good—it’s about helping them see how their growth fuels the team’s growth, too.

How to Build a Holistic Company Culture

Now, zoom out a little further. We’ve talked about personal well-being and leading a team, but what about the bigger picture—your company’s culture? And I’m not just talking about adding a ping-pong table to the breakroom or hosting casual Fridays. I mean building a real culture where holistic principles guide everything, from your mission to your decision-making.

When you take a holistic approach to company culture, you’re not just creating a place where people clock in and out. You’re building an environment where employees, customers, and even the community feel the impact of your values. It’s about long-term sustainability, not just quick wins. Because when people know your values align with theirs, they’ll engage more deeply.

A lot of companies talk about culture, but not many actually live it. A holistic culture takes intention, time, and consistent effort. But when you get it right, it creates something that benefits not just your employees but your customers and the wider community, too. And believe me—when your culture is strong, everything else falls into place.

The Holistic Flywheel: Personal, Professional, + Organizational

Imagine your life and business as a flywheel. (If you're a HubSpotter, bring up the HubSpot Flywheel mentally.) You’ve got your personal growth, your professional development, and your company’s culture all working together. If one part of the flywheel is off, everything slows down. But when all three are spinning smoothly? That’s when the magic happens.

Holistic living and working isn’t just about balancing everything—it’s about making sure every piece contributes to the whole. Your personal growth fuels your professional success, which strengthens your company’s culture, and it all works together to keep the momentum going. When you start thinking holistically, everything clicks into place. You’ll find more fulfillment, more success, and—most importantly—more joy in the work you do.
