LinkedIn Strategy Guide for Professional Growth + Examples (Updated 2024)

How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile

  1. Include a profile photo that is clear, warm, and welcoming β€” oh, and recent! Professional headshots work well, as do candids. However, be mindful of the quality of candid photos, as well as whether or not they're appropriate for who you are trying to reach.
  2. Include a relevant headline that speaks to your area of expertise, as well as any other important points of who you are. You may want to also include keywords for search visibility around your area of expertise. (Don't just default to your current job title!)
  3. Upload a relevant featured image for your profile. Avoid stock imagery or anything too generic. If you're a speaker, maybe you have a picture of you speaking on stage. If you're a founder, include a picture of you with your team. If your location is relevant, choose a recognizable photo of your town, city, state, and so on.
  4. Complete your work history section. For each job title, don't simply summarize your responsibilities. Instead, share what your goal in that position was and how you contributed to the overall vision of your organization.
  5. Post diverse, industry-relevant content. Unlike other social platforms that are primarily image-driven, LinkedIn encourages different types of posts. You can do long-form, solely text posts. You can also share images with relevant commentary. As a note, videos (with captions) that are natively uploaded to LinkedIn perform very well!
  6. Actively engage with others on the platform, too! Join groups, start discussions, and actively participate in the posts of others. Seek out people who are in your industry or those who are experiencing the problems or challenges you solve or drive discourse around.
  7. Be consistent with content! Whether you're creating content on LinkedIn or participating in the discussions of others on the platform (ideally, you're doing both!), do so consistently. If you're only showing up on LinkedIn once or twice a month (or less), growing on the platform will be near impossible.
  8. Listen to your audience and peers. Yes, you have personal priorities and goals, and you may even have an organization content strategy behind you, too. But your audience is your best resource for true understanding β€” whether that's sourcing new ideas, reframing your own opinions, or completing changing your thinking about something, never stop learning from those around you. Even those you believe you are meant to help or lead

Why This LinkedIn Growth Strategy Guide Exists

Before you dive into this guide, I need you to know something. This guide is a labor of love, my friends. Truth be told, I've been using LinkedIn for the past 12 years ...

Screen Shot 2024-03-25 at 10.02.36 AMCome say hi!

... and I've been using it for a variety of reasons.

First, although you're technically not supposed to call yourself a "thought leader," I have used the platform to connect with others in the HubSpot and inbound community, and be an educator (or thought leader) in the space, in an effort to serve and, hopefully, inspire others. I've also used it to build the GBT brand β€” now, Sidekick Strategies β€” for organizational growth and community-building purposes.

Who This LinkedIn Strategy Guide Is For ...

More and more, I'm being asked how I did it and if it is repeatable for anyone. In fact, I am writing this because I was asked if I had such a guide, based on my experience with LinkedIn, by a client just a couple of weeks ago. Since what I've been doing is based on serving others and leaning into inbound sales and marketing methodologies, the answer is a simple yet resounding "Yes!"

So, this comprehensive guide is an attempt to unpack my brain and give you the blueprint for yourself or your business finding growth on LinkedIn. And when I say "you," I mean:

  • Industry experts who solve real problems (not imagined ones) for the humans you serve
  • Seasoned professionals who want to spark genuine connections among other like-minded humans, as well as those you may be able to help with your products, services, or expertise
  • Passionate career-builders who are sincere in their desire to grow, learn, explore, and expand as you continue in your own professional journey
  • Business leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners whose visions can make a real, positive, and lasting impact in the lives of others

Basically, if you're looking for quick fixes and hacks on LinkedIn to getting as many eyeballs as possible on you, you're in the wrong place. But if you're looking to foster meaningful connections, grow exciting communities, build your purpose-driven brand, and genuinely help other humans with LinkedIn, you've come to the right place for such a journey.

Welcome to your blueprint for mastering LinkedIn in 2024.

LinkedIn Is an Undeniable Social Platform

Once upon a time, LinkedIn was the "runt" of the social media litter. Launched on May, 5, 2003, it didn't have the exciting gloss of other players in the space. Unlike Facebook and Instagram and (then) Twitter β€” the three giants of social, back in the day β€” LinkedIn seemed to many like a glorified resume hub people only visited if they needed to find a new job.

For the most part, LinkedIn was a bit like the nerdy kid who still hadn't found themselves yet, desperately wanting to be popular, but could never quite make it to the cool kids table. (And we draw that comparison with no disrespect to nerds; we love nerds, and we are nerds ourselves!) But like that nerdy kid, LinkedIn's story radically changed as it "grew up," maturing into a social powerhouse no one can deny.

Today, LinkedIn has more than 1 billion members, spanning 200 countries and regions around the world:

On top of that:

Why do we share this information? Because there may be a few of you who've wound up here with an outdated view of what LinkedIn is. If it's been a few years (or more) since you've even given a thought to LinkedIn in any sort of serious way, now is the time for you to pay attention and shift your thinking!

Today, LinkedIn is a social networking giant, with its vast and diverse user base, continuing to redefine the boundaries of professional interaction, collaboration, and career advancement. It is a hub where industry leaders, emerging talents, and innovative businesses converge.

This Is Why LinkedIn Matters to Your Growth Strategy

It's not just a platform for job seekers; it's a dynamic arena for thought leadership, skill development, and industry insights. (That's right! If you're a business leader, there's a good chance your marketing team has been telling you this for years, but now you actually have to pay attention.)

Its role in today's professional landscape is profound, offering a unique blend of connectivity, learning, and growth opportunities. But who knows what the future holds. Its capabilities will likely expand, which means your ability to connect and growth with LinkedIn will do the same. Or you can go with a classic conversion offer to drive site traffic or "contact us" conversions.

Although LinkedIn can drive value for you, no matter what you do or sell, if you're in the B2B space, you should definitely have your eyes on LinkedIn. There's a reason why LinkedIn is the most popular lead generation platform with B2B brands, and advertising is no exception.

LinkedIn Live Event Broadcasting

We're big fans of event-led growth for B2B company's looking to humanize and grow. That's why we love LinkedIn Live! LinkedIn Live brings an unparalleled level of engagement and authenticity. They allow professionals like you to showcase their expertise, host Q&A sessions, and interact with their audience in real time, creating a sense of community and immediacy.

However, this is not a feature offered to every user. Yes, every LinkedIn user can join a LinkedIn Live broadcast, but you must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible to host your own LinkedIn Live broadcast, including:

  • More than 150 followers for your profile or brand page
  • Clean history of adhering to LinkedIn's Professional Community Policies
  • Reside and operate within geographic regions where this feature is currently enabled (e.g., China does not currently have access to this feature)

If you meet these requirements, you can trigger the feature for your page.

LinkedIn Polls

Polls are an excellent tool for gauging audience interest, collecting feedback, and sparking discussions ...

They provide valuable insights into audience preferences and opinions, making them a vital resource for content strategy and engagement. Combining LinkedIn Live videos and polls can enhance your LinkedIn strategy by fostering active participation and real-time engagement.

LinkedIn Company Pages

LinkedIn Company Pages a crucial component of a business's online presence. Even if you're a thought leader, independent expert, or entrepreneur seeking to boost your personal brand, you should make sure the company that stands behind you is checking this box.

Your Company Page serves as your brand's "home base" to showcase products, services, and company updates. When optimized and built correctly β€” e.g., you're going out of your way to create a human experience that is sincerely helpful and makes it easy to connect with the story of your brand β€” these pages provide a dedicated space for businesses like yours to engage with their audience, build brand credibility, and attract potential clients.

So, again, even if you're a personal brand "army of one," or that executive or thought leader who finally gave into the demands of your marketing team (thank you, you won't regret it!), make sure your brand is nailing its presence on LinkedIn, as well.

LinkedIn Product Pages

Product Pages on LinkedIn are a game-changer for businesses and entrepreneurs.

These pages enable showcasing products or services, gathering customer reviews, and highlighting unique selling points. They serve as a dedicated space to attract and inform potential clients about specific offerings.

Product Pages are different from a LinkedIn Company Profile page:

LinkedIn Analytics

So, you best believe we're not leaving the LinkedIn features conversation behind without talking about their reporting and analytics options. Honestly, we could probably create a whole guide dedicated to just that topic. (Heck, maybe we will, someday!) But for today, we're going to focus on the basics.

Crafting a Winning LinkedIn Profile

Years ago, we thought of LinkedIn as nothing more than a digital business card. Today, however, for brand-building thought leaders like you, it's a heck of a lot more. LinkedIn is a powerful, dynamic hub of community-building, where you can exchange ideas, forge new relationships, and so much more.

The key to making the most of the platform begins with crafting a totally human LinkedIn profile that introduces you to the world and helps other folks in your industry get to know you. Mastering crafting a winning LinkedIn profile in 2024 requires more than just listing your experiences; it's about creating a narrative that captures your professional journey, skills, and aspirations.

From choosing the perfect profile picture to penning an engaging summary and showcasing your accomplishments, we'll guide you through each step of creating a profile that stands out in the crowded digital space of LinkedIn. Keep reading as we unlock the secrets to making your LinkedIn profile a beacon of your professional identity.

Optimize Your Profile with Engaging Images

In the digital world of LinkedIn, the first impression is often visual. Optimizing your profile with engaging images is crucial. A professional profile picture and a compelling cover image can speak volumes about your professional persona. Here's a great example from my friend (and my ol' boss!), Remington Begg of Impulse Creative.

Remington's profile photo showcases his personality. His cover photo speaks to the mission of his company, while also telling you a bit about what they do and who they are. He also uses emojis and tells you so much more than just what his title is; it's full of personality and vision! Then, if you take a step back and look at this snapshot of his profile, you'll see how they all tie together with visual cohesion.

When you think about your own profile, remember that your visuals should align with your career objectives and personal brand, inviting viewers to explore your profile further. And while they don't have to be as color coordinated as Remington's profile, your visuals and storytelling in your profile should "hang together," if you catch my meaning. It should all look purposefully pulled together. Think of your images as a visual elevator pitch – they should instantly convey your professional identity and set the tone for your LinkedIn narrative.

Screen Shot 2024-04-26 at 12.37.59 PM

If you don't have a ton of graphic design expertise, you can also take a more simple and, dare I say it, "human" approach to your LinkedIn profile introduction. Candid, high-quality photos of you in action, doing what you do best, are a great way to customize your LinkedIn profile in an authentic and engaging way!

For example, I'm the owner here at Sidekick Strategies, but I'm also a global inbound educator and speaker, so that's how I show up in my profile for the world to see.

Develop a Compelling Headline and Summary

Your LinkedIn headline and summary are more than mere formalities; they're the quick snapshot of who you are β€” great LinkedIn headlines clearly and succinctly communicate what you do, what you believe, what your purpose is, and so on. In fact, you can do a lot of personal storytelling in your headlines!

Screen Shot 2024-04-26 at 12.35.05 PMScreen Shot 2024-04-26 at 12.35.31 PMThe summary is where your story unfolds, blending your professional journey, achievements, and future aspirations. It's an opportunity to showcase your unique value proposition, weaving in your personality and professional ethos. These elements effectively tell your story, enticing viewers to connect and engage.

Showcase Experience and Skills

Showcasing experience and skills on LinkedIn goes beyond listing past roles. It's about narrating your professional journey in a way that highlights your growth, achievements, and the unique skills you bring to the table. Detail your roles, but focus on the impact and results of your work, using specific examples and metrics where possible.

Here, we explore various aspects of content creation, including identifying and tailoring content to your target audience, leveraging multimedia formats, and employing innovative techniques to maximize engagement and reach.

This approach is about much more than posting regularly; it's about strategically connecting with your audience through thoughtfully curated content that resonates and adds value.

Diverse Content Types for Engagement

Diversifying content types on LinkedIn is a crucial strategy for boosting engagement. This approach involves exploring various content forms like articles, videos, infographics, and interactive polls, each appealing to different audience segments.

Screen Shot 2024-04-26 at 12.44.53 PMHere's an example of a poll post from Liz Moorehead (fellow HubHeroes Podcast host), which sparked a ton of conversation, in addition to providing data-driven insights about podcasting.

You can also share videos on LinkedIn, the way I did above for a recent episode of the HubHeroes podcast. Video performs incredibly well on LinkedIn, when you natively upload it to the platform by the way. But don't forget to include captions, so it's accessible to all β€” especially since many of us don't watch videos with the sound on!

By varying content types, you can capture the attention of a broader audience and keep their network engaged. This diversity not only enhances the visual appeal of your LinkedIn feed but also caters to the varied preferences of your connections, increasing the likelihood of interactions and shares.

Align Content with Audience Needs

Aligning content with your audience's needs is crucial for effective communication on LinkedIn. It requires understanding your target audience's interests, challenges, and aspirations and creating content that addresses these areas. Focus on delivering value through their content by providing industry insights, sharing experiences, or offering solutions to common problems.

The Importance of Regular Posting and Scheduling

This consistency in posting helps build a loyal following, as your network anticipates and looks forward to your insights and updates. A regular posting schedule ensures that your content reaches a broader audience over time, amplifying your brand's visibility and impact on the platform.

Diversify your content formats, including multimedia use and implementing innovative techniques to enhance reach and engagement. It's crucial to grasp the significance of tailoring your content to meet your target audience's needs, ensuring it resonates and provides tangible value. This method transcends regular posting; it's about crafting strategic and thoughtful content that effectively connects with and expands your LinkedIn network.

Consistency + Community Engagement

In the world of LinkedIn, where content is king, consistency and community engagement reign as the queen. The professional networking landscape on LinkedIn emphasizes sharing content and creating a rhythm of regular engagement and meaningful interactions.

Screen Shot 2024-04-26 at 2.37.55 PMIt's all about the humans, when it comes to connections on LinkedIn!

Creating an engaging and consistent presence on LinkedIn is a heck of a lot more than just posting regularly; it's about nurturing a dynamic and interactive professional network in a way that's authentic, human, and genuinely helpful. So, let's explore strategies to stay consistently visible and how to transform your LinkedIn activity into a hub of professional exchange and growth.

Strategies for Regular Interaction

To optimize your LinkedIn experience, regular interaction is critical. This involves not only posting consistently but also engaging with others' content.

  • Start by dedicating a specific time each day for LinkedIn activities.
  • Comment on posts that resonate with your expertise or interests, and don't hesitate to initiate discussions.
  • Share insights or ask questions to foster meaningful conversations.

LinkedIn's notification features can help you keep track of interactions and ensure timely responses, further nurturing these professional relationships.

Building + Nurturing Professional Relationships

Building and nurturing professional relationships on LinkedIn goes beyond mere connections. It's about developing trust and rapport. Begin by personalizing connection requests with a brief note about common interests or how you found their profile interesting. Once connected, engage with their content thoughtfully – like and comment genuinely. #BeHuman

Share relevant articles or insights that might interest them. Additionally, consider sending personalized messages on special occasions like work anniversaries or promotions.

One word of caution, though! Do we love AI and how it can help you automate certain tasks? Absolutely. However, we strongly advise against sending default or AI responses to these connections or for comments.

We've heard horror stories of folks being sent almost entirely identical, AI-generated responses from different people. It's also becoming unfortunately more common to see large comment threads on popular accounts filled with identical comments, which were all AI generated. Yikes.

Employer Branding and Employee Involvement

The face of employer branding has evolved significantly, with LinkedIn emerging as a pivotal platform. Integrating employee involvement in corporate branding on LinkedIn offers a unique and authentic perspective that resonates with potential clients and future talent.

The following strategies emphasize the dual benefit of telling your brand's story on LinkedIn to newcomers, while fostering a sense of community and belonging among your current employees.

Employee Content for the Win!

Incorporating employee-generated content on LinkedIn is a powerful strategy for enhancing a company's brand presence. When employees share their work experiences, insights, and achievements, it humanizes the brand and showcases diverse perspectives from within the organization.

Screen Shot 2024-04-26 at 2.54.46 PMWhy yes, that is our friend, Kyle Jepson from HubSpot!

This collaborative approach to content creation presents a more authentic and multifaceted image of the company. Encouraging both owners and employees to use LinkedIn actively amplifies the company's voice in the digital space. Content from employees can vary from project highlights and insights into the company culture to their participation in industry events and professional achievements.

Such a variety of content enriches the company's narrative on LinkedIn and makes the brand more relatable and appealing to a broader audience, including potential clients and future employees.

When a company leverages its workforce to create and share content, it demonstrates trust in its employees and a commitment to transparency. This approach can significantly enhance employer branding, giving a glimpse into the working environment and the company's values. Active participation by employees on LinkedIn can also lead to increased engagement, wider reach, and a more robust professional network for the company, ultimately contributing to its growth and success in the marketplace.

Establishing Thought Leadership on LinkedIn

Establishing thought leadership on LinkedIn is more than just sharing expertise; it's about creating a distinct voice that resonates with and influences your professional network. This approach involves crafting articles and posts that reflect your unique perspective and professional knowledge. Here's how to effectively use LinkedIn for this purpose:

  1. Craft Insightful Content: Begin by writing articles or creating posts showcasing your field expertise. This could include sharing unique insights, industry trends, or personal experiences shaping your professional journey.
  2. Share Personal Experiences and Lessons Learned: Your journey is unique, and sharing it can resonate with many. Discuss challenges you've overcome, lessons you've learned, and milestones you've achieved. This adds a human element to your profile and provides real-life context to your expertise.
  3. Contribute to Industry Discussions: Engage with content posted by others in your field. Comment on posts, share your thoughts on current industry trends and participate in LinkedIn group discussions. This increases your visibility and establishes you as an active professional community member.
  4. Provide Valuable Insights: Go beyond just stating facts or opinions; provide actionable insights that others can learn from. These could be tips, strategies, or thought-provoking questions encouraging interaction and discussion.
  5. Foster Knowledge Exchange: Encourage feedback and dialogue through your posts. Ask questions, solicit opinions, and be open to different viewpoints. This enriches the discussion and helps build a network of engaged professionals.
  6. Emphasize Thought Leadership: Position yourself as a leader by staying ahead of trends and sharing forward-thinking ideas. This involves not just sharing knowledge but also interpreting what future developments in your industry might look like.

By consistently applying these strategies, you enhance your brand on LinkedIn. You transition from being a platform user to becoming a valued resource and influencer within your professional community. This benefits your career growth and contributes positively to the larger professional ecosystem on LinkedIn.

Engaging with the LinkedIn Community as a Thought Leader

As a thought leader, engaging with the LinkedIn community involves actively participating in discussions, responding to comments, and initiating conversations around relevant topics.

Surfe: While less widely known than LinkedIn Navigator, Surfe is an emerging tool that can complement your LinkedIn strategy, particularly in content discovery and engagement. I love how simple yet powerful this tool is and how seemingly it works with my HubSpot CRM! Now, back to the good stuff, aka the details.

  • Content Discovery and Sharing: Surfe helps you find trending content within your industry, which you can share or use as inspiration for your posts. You demonstrate your expertise and relevance in your field by staying on top of industry trends.
  • Engagement Analytics: Track how your shared content performs regarding reach and engagement. These insights can guide you in refining your content strategy to better resonate with your audience.
