The Hidden HubSpot GDPR Setting That's Blocking Your Communications

May 16, 2025

You're Getting That GDPR Warning for a Reason

So you've just turned on GDPR in HubSpot, or maybe you're new to the platform altogether. Either way, you're probably pulling your hair out right now because you're getting warning messages when you try to communicate with your contacts. That little notification pops up, and you're thinking, "What the heck gives?" Well, we've got good news: there's one hidden setting in your forms that's likely the culprit, and it's probably easier to fix than you think.

The GDPR Setting You're Missing

Here's the thing: if you didn't dig through all of HubSpot's documentation or watch their academy videos on GDPR, it's easy to miss this one crucial element. But it's sitting right there in your forms, waiting for you to discover it. The good news? Once you know what to look for, you're literally minutes away from solving this problem.

Where to Find the GDPR Option

Let's walk through this step by step:

  1. Head into your HubSpot forms tool and select the form you want to edit
  2. Look for the form elements section and expand it
  3. Close up the "frequently used properties" section to reveal additional options
  4. Look for the GDPR options dropdown, which you'll find right there in plain sight (once you know where to look)

The Three GDPR Settings You Need to Know

When you click into that GDPR options dropdown, you're going to see something that probably says "none." That's your problem right there. That's why you're getting those warnings and can't communicate with your contacts immediately after they submit a form.

Instead of leaving it on "none," you've got a few solid options to choose from:

  • Consent Checkbox for Communications: This option requires humans to explicitly check a box saying they consent to you reaching out to them. It's straightforward and GDPR compliant.
  • Form Submit as Consent to Process: This treats the act of submitting your form as consent. It's a bit more passive but still legally sound.
  • Consent Checkbox for Communication and Processing: This is the comprehensive option, covering both communication consent and data processing consent in one checkbox.
  • Legitimate Interest: If you've determined that legitimate interest is your legal basis, you can select this instead. It depends on your specific business situation.

Here's What Happens When You Fix It

Once you've selected the right option for your business needs, it's time to update and publish your form. That's it. Just hit update, publish, and you're back in the races. Now when humans fill out your forms, you'll be able to communicate with them immediately without those pesky warning messages popping up.

But there's another huge benefit you might not have considered: your automations will actually work. And that's critical. There's nothing worse than setting up beautiful automation workflows for form submissions only to have them fail because you didn't configure the GDPR settings properly. Once you've got this dialed in, your automations will fire correctly and your entire system will run like it's supposed to.

The Bottom Line

This is one of those sneaky little things that can trip you up when you're getting started with HubSpot and GDPR compliance. But it's also one of the easiest things to fix once you know what you're looking for. Take five minutes right now, go into your forms, check that GDPR setting, and make sure you're not leaving it on "none." Your contacts will thank you, your automations will run smoothly, and everything will be right in the world.
